You have ideas. Fragments of songs, half-finished lyrics, a voice note you keep coming back to. In a world where AI can generate a song in seconds, the hard part is no longer making something — it’s making something that is genuinely, unmistakably yours. That’s what artist development is for.

As a singer-songwriter, producer, and artist development mentor, and Student Adviser at Abbey Road Institute Amsterdam, I work with artists across the full arc of that journey.

Developing as an artist means more than finishing individual songs. It means gradually building:

✅ A consistent artistic identity — a sound, a voice, a perspective that is distinctly yours
✅ A catalogue of original work — songs that belong together and tell a story about who you are
✅ The craft and skills to realise your musical vision fully
✅ The confidence to share that work with the world

This is a long-term creative process. The goal is not to sound like everyone else, or to sound like what the algorithm expects. The goal is to find the song that only you can write.

Every artist’s path is different, but artist development typically moves through three connected phases:

1. Songwriting & Craft Finding your voice. Writing songs that say something true. Developing your skills in lyrics, melody, structure, and composition. This is where everything begins.

2. Recording & Production Taking your songs into the studio. Shaping the sound, the arrangement, the production identity. Turning a song into a record. (See Production for more on this phase.)

3. Release & Direction Understanding how to bring your music into the world — building an audience, navigating the music industry, developing a sustainable creative life as an artist.

You don’t have to be at the beginning. Wherever you are in this journey, we can find the right entry point and move forward from there.

Singer-songwriter Kristof Vesely came to me with fragments of songs, quietly mumbling beautiful lyrics in a deep voice, hiding behind his curly blond hair — ideas that were clearly there, but hadn’t yet found their shape.

Over time, those sessions evolved into producing his first EP. We worked together across every stage: learning how to write better lyrics, composition, melody, developing the songs, finding his artistic voice, shaping the sound, and bringing the recordings to life.

He arrived with fragments. He left with a finished body of work.

“I never noticed how much Petra had helped me progress with my music writing capabilities until I look back on my work before I started working with her. It’s amazing how much she has helped me progress.”

Kristof Vesely, Singer/Songwriter (17)

This kind of progression — from rough idea to finished, released music — is what artist development at MOS is designed to make possible.

During artist development sessions, we can work on any combination of the following, depending on where you are and what you need:

  • You’re a singer-songwriter with ideas you haven’t been able to fully realise
  • You want to build a consistent artistic identity and a body of work that represents you
  • You’re ready to commit to the full journey — from songwriting through to recording and release

Every artist’s journey is different. These areas emerge naturally as we work together.

Artist development is the right fit if you:

  • Are a singer-songwriter who wants to develop your own material into a real body of work
  • Have song ideas but struggle to finish songs or find your direction
  • Want to build a consistent artistic identity and sound
  • Are ready to move toward recording and releasing your music
  • Want to better understand the music industry and how to navigate it as an independent artist
  • Feel ready to take your music more seriously and commit to the full journey

Whether you’re just starting out or already writing regularly, the goal is the same: to help you grow into a confident artist with a clear voice and strong songs.

Artist development sessions are typically one-on-one and held at my studio in Hilversum, Netherlands, where we can work deeply — listening to your material, developing songs, exploring production ideas, and building your direction over time.

Sessions can also be booked as focused conversations around career strategy, artistic direction, or a specific phase of your journey.

This is not a fixed programme. It’s a creative partnership, built around where you are and where you want to go.

Not sure if you’re ready for the full artist development journey? Start with Coaching — focused one-on-one sessions for songwriters at any stage.

You don’t have to be ready. You just have to be willing to start.

A relaxed 30-minute conversation to look at your music, your goals, and whether working together feels right.
